LEISA

Network of magazines on low external input and sustainable agriculture

Welcome / Bienvenido / Salam / Bienvenue / Bem-vindo / 欢迎

Welcome to the LEISA Network
Success stories from small-scale farmers are often hard to find. They do exist, and there is much to be learnt from them. They can help improve productivity, generate income, and empower farmers. The LEISA Network finds and publishes these stories, and exchanges knowledge and information on sustainable, small-holder farming around the world.

The LEISA Network publishes seven magazines: a global edition and six regional editions. They provide their readers (farmers, field workers, researchers, policy makers) with accounts of practical experiences on sustainable small-holder farming, and also offer debate, background information to the news, and information on books and websites. All the editions together have close to 50,000 subscribers, and many more readers (the magazines are frequently shared with other people).

Jubilee Conference

As part of our 25th birthday celebrations, we are hosting a challenging debate on the Future of Family Farming on 15 December 2009 in The Hague, the Netherlands. Together with professionals from science, government, business, NGOs and partners from the South we want to explore what the world can expect from family farming and how it addresses global problems like climate change and food security. During this one-day event, international (field) experts will share their cutting edge perspectives on what small farmers have to offer to the world. Visit the Future of Family Farming conference website for more information and registration options. For further questions you can also contact Mireille Vermeulen (033 - 467 38 70, info@foffdebate.org).

We have a new partner!

We are happy to announce that another organisation has joined this network. This is ALIN, the Arid Lands Information Network, a dynamic organisation working in East Africa. With more than 2000 members, ALIN is best known for the information it disseminates, and for its various periodicals. One of these is Baobab, a 4-monthly magazine which highlights the best development practices in African drylands. Following their interest in facilitating the exchange of information, ALIN has now launched an English language version of LEISA Magazine for East Africa, to provide readers there with regional information on sustainable, small-scale agriculture. The magazine is called Kilimo Endelevu Africa (KEA). Vol. 1, issue 1 was published in July 2009.

Global economic crisis: responses from LEISA Network partners

LEISA partners in Senegal, Cameroon, Indonesia, China, India and Peru give their reactions and opinions on the global economic crisis. It seems clear that there is a shared need to make sense out of what is happening. Also there are several parallels and larger issues emerging from the responses.
To encourage further debate and reflection, the discussion is being continued on our Open Forum. Click the link and share your thoughts!

Blog: LEISA's Farm

blogbannerLEISA Network partner ILEIA (global edition) has started a weblog on relevant family farming topics. Go to LEISA's Farm and check it out! You may subscribe to blog updates via e-mail or via a feedreader; see the blog's sidebar.  Of course, comments on the blog postings are welcome.
LEISA's Farm is also present on Twitter. There you'll find short, quick messages and news related to sustainable agriculture.

Sustaining the gains
LEISA Magazine, vol. 25 issue 4, December 2009.
Because of LEISA Magazine's 25th birthday, this year's last issue will be a special one. In this special jubilee issue we would like to look at initiatives taken to scale-up successful methods and approaches to sustainable agriculture. Equally important, we will look at the factors that have stopped or hindered the spreading of sustainable agricultural practices.
What are your experiences with scaling-up sustainable processes? What makes them special and why do you think they are relevant to others?
Please send your ideas by August 15th, 2009, to Jorge Chavez-Tafur, editor, at j.chavez-tafur(at)ileia.nl.
